Linking your PIN can save you time because your information won’t have to be matched by the Social Security Administration if it was already matched when you created your PIN. If that’s the case, then your FSA ID is ready for full use right away—which means you’ll be able to sign a Master Promissory Note for a student loan, or fill out your Renewal FAFSA, right away. The application is available until June 30, 2023—but be sure to remind your students that some funds are limited, so it is a good idea to apply as soon as possible.
If you have multiple children who need to complete the FAFSA form, you can use the same FSA ID to sign FAFSA forms for all of your children. You can also transfer your information into your other children’s applications by choosing the option provided on the FAFSA confirmation page. Even if your child doesn’t live with you, supports him or herself, and files taxes separately from you, he or she may still be considered a dependent student for federal student aid purposes. To access eCDR Appeals and Experimental Sites select the 'Registration'link at the FSA login page and complete the registration process. The username and password combination you entered is not valid.

It’s easy to set up, and you can get one on a variety of ED websites. (I would recommend StudentAid.gov/fsaid because there is also a lot of good information and advice about student aid and the FSA ID there). The one-time PIN for this session is valid for only ten minutes. If your one-time PIN expires, you will need to re-enter your username and password to receive a new PIN.
Do not share your FSA ID with anyone, not even your child. Your child should also not share his or her FSA ID with you. You’ll need it to renew your FAFSA form each year and to access federal student aid information online. You will see a warning message 5 days before your password is set to expire during your login. This warning message will display a prompt for you to change your password before it expires.

If your answers are correct, you will be allowed to reset your password. The 2022–23FAFSA on the WebWorksheet provides a preview of questions that applicants and parents may be asked while completing the FAFSA form atfafsa.gov. It is not the financial aid application, nor is it part of the application. It is simply an optional tool to help applicants complete their FAFSA form online at fafsa.gov and should not be submitted to Federal Student Aid. When creating your FSA ID, there will be an option to enter your PIN and link the two.
Make sure you and your child don’t mix up your FSA IDs. This is one of the most common errors we see, and why it’s extremely important for each person to create his/her own FSA ID and not share it with anyone. We recommend that you and your child register for FSA IDs ahead of time, so you don’t experience delays later in the process.

It also allows you to save your child’s FAFSA form and return to it later. Once you create a save key, share it with your child. He or she will need it to complete later steps. To reset a password, select the 'Forgot Password' link at the FSA login page and answer the challenge questions correctly. Your FSA ID will be locked after three unsuccessful login attempts. When the password is unlocked 30 minutes later, you can try again or you can select the 'Forgot Password' link at the FSA Login page and answer the challenge questions. What happens next is that ED checks your information with the Social Security Administration to make sure it matches. During that time, you will only be able to use your FSA ID to sign your new FAFSA (that’s the main thing though, so don’t stress).

If you’re eligible, you’ll see an option to “Link to IRS.” Choose that option and follow the prompts. Can I share my user ID and password with someone else? Your user ID and your password private and are for your use only and must remain confidential. You must not disclose your password to anyone, including your supervisor and you must take steps to prevent anyone from finding out your password. Sharing your user ID with another person is a serious violation of security. If you fail to keep login information confidential, your user ID will be terminated and you or organization could lose access to FSA systems.
You’re not finished with the FAFSA form until you and your child sign it. The FSA ID recently replaced the PIN as the way you log in to certain U.S. Department of Education websites, including fafsa.gov. It consists of a username and password and is basically the electronic equivalent of your signature.
Then, after the Social Security Administration match is done, you should receive an e-mail letting you know that you’ll now be able to use your FSA ID on a number of ED websites. We consider financial aid administrators, school counselors, college access organization staff, and other mentors to be our partners in educating students about applying for and receiving federal student aid. Several times a year, we email our partners with updates about our products and services, reminders about upcoming professional development opportunities, tips for outreach to students, and more.
In fact, you don’t even have to remove schools if your child later decides not to apply or attend. If your child doesn’t end up applying or getting accepted to a school, the school can just disregard his or her FAFSA form. You can remove schools at any time to make room for new schools. If your child is applying to more than 10 schools, here’s what you should do. While the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is the student’s application, we know that parents often play a large role in the process. After all, students who are considered dependent have to provide parental information on the FAFSA form anyway and must have a parent sign it.
